What I'm hoping for is that the better play will make some of the players we (okay, I) thought were untradeable into trade bait. I don't see any Montreal player getting the team another first round pick, but maybe, just maybe, they can get a third or fourth round draft choice for Drouin, Hoffman, etc. Edmundson's injury and Monahan's mysterious injury have pretty much killed their trade value, at least insofar as getting a good prospect or a high draft choice. So, ultimately, I think that we can unfortunately look for an underwhelming trade deadline.
It is entirely possible that it ends up being underwhelming in terms of scope. They're definitely not going to be able to trade all of the contracts that they would ideally want to get rid of. That said, the good news is some of the ideal candidates are heating up.
Kent Hughes should be able to move some of the bad contracts, and hopefully can make a splash with one of his veteran D-men on the way out.
